Who the hell is Edward Durr?
Making the biggest change, requires taking the biggest risk.
Edward Durr is a truck driver for a New Jersey furniture store.
Durr wanted to see change in his home state. So he ran for office.
His platform was simple: Individuals having control over decisions, not government.
The only problem is that he ran against the second most powerful politician in New Jersey- the Senate president.
Ed didn’t have money. In fact, he spent $153 on his campaign in the primary.
On the other hand, Steve Sweeney, the person that he ran against, has held that office since 2003. He is the Senate President in New Jersey. He won his last election by 17 points. And spent $14 million against his opponent in his last election.
To most people, Edward Durr is crazy.
Most people told him he could never win. Most people said this was a suicide mission.
So when New Jersey saw the highest voter turnout in state history, most people wrote Edward Durr off.
But here is why Edward Durr is not most people: he ran, he is currently up by 2,000 votes and he is on the cusp of becoming New Jersey’s newest state senator.
Because politics, like life, is often about being in the right place at the right time, so that when an opportunity presents itself, you can overcome any odds.
This is why the Illinois Policy Institute is recruiting 44 Edward Durr’s for the next election.
In Illinois, only half the districts in the last decade have been contested.
The reason Illinois has become less competitive is not because it’s moved left. In fact, in Illinois, the number of conservatives and liberals are about equal.
The reason it has become uncompetitive is because of apathy. People have quit trying. They have quit believing. It feels easier to say, “Illinois is lost” than to stand up and be Edward Durr.
We are going to change that.
We will fill every legislative seat. No matter how much money the incumbent has. No matter how many years the incumbent has been in office. No matter what the political class says.
Because if you don’t show up, you can’t win.
If you don’t compete, you will always lose.
In a year from now, we will show up. In every district. In every part of the state. And we are going to win.
